Business Funding Guide: Which Option Is Right for You?
Every business needs money to start and to grow. But there is more than one way to raise it, and each has its own benefits and risks. Understanding the differences helps you choose wisely.
Debt funding: You borrow money and repay it with interest. Examples are bank loans, NBFC loans and business credit lines. You keep full ownership of your business, but you must repay on time, even in a slow month.
Equity funding: You raise money by giving a share of your business to investors. Examples are angel investors and venture capital. You do not have to repay in fixed instalments, but you give up part of the ownership and sometimes part of the control.
Government schemes: Schemes such as Mudra, Startup India and PMEGP offer loans, subsidies or guarantees on easier terms. They are helpful, but they need paperwork and have eligibility conditions.
Self-funding: Using your own savings or business profits. You take no outside pressure, but growth may be slower.
Understanding funding risk: Before taking any funding, ask yourself three questions. Can the business comfortably repay the instalments? What happens if sales drop for a few months? How much ownership or control am I giving up?
Simple tips: Borrow only what you need. Keep personal and business money separate. Compare more than one lender. Read every term carefully before signing.
